Second Local Show

This is our second "official" local show. It's at the Pittsburgh ExpoMart in Monroeville Thurs-Sat Oct 7-9 I've never had a successful show there, but I'm trying a completely different tact. This is a craft show, so we'll be doing demonstrations, teaching, showing off and not really "selling". That's what the store is for. The .pdf for the classes is posted on our http://betterbeading.com site, if you are interested. 4 classes a day, is a pretty rough schedule. With luck, it will pay off as advertising for the holidays -- which is what we are hoping. We've never been greatly successful at shows, too much competition for the same items. Doing this "interactive" stuff, hopefully will be the difference. If not... one more level of Bead Hell!

All I can say, is "OH WOW". It was the *WORST* show I/We have EVER, EVER been to, and it made our previous shows at the ExpoMart look like SRO performances. Our best day was Thursday (before the news of how bad the show was leaked out, and people decided to blow it off), and it got worse, until Saturday it was a GHOST TOWN. Even the food service cut back on what they offered, and closed early! Saturday, they cut back!! Didn't even wait for whether people were going to show up, just assumed they weren't -- and they were RIGHT!!! High booth fees, and NO (I really do mean NO!) attendence. I don't know what was going through the organizers minds, but there should have been 5-8,000 people there MINIMUM for a show like this, and there was barely a 1/10th of that! Some of the vendors tried to close up on Saturday, but were blocked. It was *BAD*. Really, really bad. I don't know how else to put it. The promoters should refund everyone's booth fees -- it was that bad. On the UP SIDE (if there is one), the people who did show up for our classes, seemed to have a really good time, and several were so excited they were showing everyone on the way out what they did, and what they learned. It always gives us the warm fuzzies when people get excited about learning and come away with a skill they never thought they'd be able to master. There really ought to be a special level of "BEAD HELL" just for this show. I feel sorry for all the vendors that had $2000 and $2700 booths, and *NO* CUSTOMERS!!

I just did my 3rd show, or it did me, I'm in recovery. It wasn't as bad as yours. I made my booth fee, and a few dollars, but I feel lied to by the promoters. Promoters have a responsibility to bring people in! We pay for the space, but if no one walks by it, the space isn't worth much. I wouldn't mind paying $300 or $500 if 1000 people really walked by my booth! Maybe only 200 people did. I was lucky to come away with the money I did. I liked the comments the people who did look made about the jewelry I only wish more people were there. Is this something that happens often? I've read on a few boards this has been happening, and is it a new trend? Little Imp With the Dimples.
