I'll bet, that I could (or someone else could) show that their works were derivative works of others -- particularly where they live or went to school. Or, were from an older style or theme. These "hard liners" would be hard pressed to enforce any of this, and I would love to see how something played out in the courts. Look at the "knock offs" being imported from overseas. The only thing they can't do is claim to _BE_ the product. They can look like them, but as long as they carry a different tag, they are not illegal to import or sell. So.... Give your designers a heads up. BTW: I have been the brunt of many a "designer" at shows, or in shops, and I have no problem standing them down. I've taken "design challenges" as described above, and have not lost yet. Of course, as noted in the previous note, truly unique items are excluded. When it comes down to it, it's very hard to duplicate something exactly, and no one has an exclusive to any form of putting beads on wires, or weaving beads, or similar. How many times have you seen a design, and thought "I made something like that?" Or have been in a shop you consign or sell to, and wonder if one of the items is yours, or was someone elses? Unless you add a "trademark" to them, it's really hard to know for certain. And, for the record, not everyone is trying to make or sell $2500 items. Most people work in the $30-50 range, and some work in the sub $20 range. So, think about just how many ways there are to be unique in stringing a set group of beads on an 8" wire.
